A Brief History

The choir was formed in 1977, the year of the Queen's Silver Jubilee, consequently the name Jubilate seemed like an obvious choice. We were not an entirely new choir. Many of our members had sung in St Michael's Singers, based at St Michael's Church, Wallington. By 1975 we had become the Royal Russell Singers, rehearsing in the Royal Russell School. When we could no longer rehearse in this school, we changed our name to the Jubilate Choir.

In the past the choir has joined in the Croydon Music Council performances at the Fairfield Halls. Each Christmas our members would sing in the annual Messiah from Scratch event at St Luke's in West Norwood. We also enjoyed successful concerts with the Chandos Choir from South Croydon. The Jubilate has always been a strong supporter of charities like Voices for Hospices.

In 2001 Janet Haney took over as Music Director. Due to her many contacts Janet brings professional and often well-known singers and musicians to perform at our concerts, making these events into an uplifting experience not to be missed.

Previous Music Directors: Chris Dowie, Colin Yorke, Christopher Fifield.

What of the Future?

Our plans include collaborating with youth choral groups; continuing to raise money for charities and extending our concert repertoire under the excellent leadership of Janet Haney. Why not come and sing, and be part of our future history?

The Jubilate Logo

The Jubilate logo used on this website is very near to our official logo as used on flyers, posters etc. It's made from the capitals 'J' and 'S' for Jubilate Singers, approximating to a treble 'G' clef.
